Take your first steps

Taking your first step into investing on the stock market may seem a daunting prospect - but it needn't be.

Investment uses skills you acquire in your every day life - skills like information gathering, judgement, analysis, decision-making. We're here to help you apply those skills to making your money work harder, with information and tools that can turn you from a cautious novice into a confident investor

Investing isn't without its risks. Naturally you'll hope to get more back by investing than you would from keeping your money in the bank. But it's well understood that the value of investments can go down as well as up and that you may not get back what you originally invested. So we'll help you understand the different levels of risk associated with different types of investments, show you various ways to evaluate an investment, and then help you monitor how well they're doing.

And with alerts to keep you in touch, our regular magazines to give you news, information and ideas, and our special 'limit' order options, we'll help you stay in touch and in control of your investments.

Develop your skills

'You're never too old to learn' is one of those oft-trotted out phrases that could have been tailor-made for investors.

Information is the life blood of the investor - we'll help you keep up-to-date, provide you with information about techniques and strategies, and give you tools to help you implement them, so you can hone your investment skills.

New investments come along all the time - ETFs, ETCs, REITS, CFDs, EMTNs... What are they? How do they work? What will they do for me? These are all questions you'll want answered at various times in your investment life. Different instruments have different risk and reward attributes, so it's important you understand them and assess where and how they fit with your overall investment objectives. That way you can decide which to use, when and how ... and which to avoid. And whilst we can't advise you on which will be suitable to your personal circumstances (if you're not sure we'd recommend you talk to an independent financial adviser), our Research & Education and Market data sections will help you understand what's available, evaluate their suitability and apply your new found knowledge.
